Nutrients

A nutrient is an ingredient added to our product recipes not only for its ability to make soap or lotion, but also for its skin care properties. These additives are substances that not only alter the overall appearance of a given product but also lend their own unique qualities to it. Many soaps are drying. By adding organic nutrients, this can be reversed, to create a soap that both cleanses and moisturizes. Some nutrients are conditioning, while others are emollient. Some heal the skin, while others stimulate it.

A few nutrients protect other ingredients from spoilage while offering the skin vitamins and attracting moisture. Honey, for example, is a wonderful skin softener. It also hydrates, soothes the skin, and inhibits the growth of bacteria. Cornmeal and oatmeal are nutrients incorporated into some soaps for their gentle exfoliating or scrubbing properties. These particular nutrients are added to our soaps at trace, just before adding essential oils.

Avocado, kukui nut, sweet almond, and jojoba oils are examples of oils that can play a dual role of both nutrient and base oil. Hummingbird hand-crafted soaps begin with the finest of beneficial oils. Emu oil, an added nutrient, is added to every soap we create near the end of saponification. This helps create a superfatted, most enriching bar for your health and well being.
