Cedarwood: CEDRUS ATLANTICA

Traditionally used by the N. American Indians to enhance their potential for spiritual communication. It was also used to treat their respiratory infections, rheumatism, arthritis, skin & kidney infections. Cedarwood is an excellent insect and vermin repellent, and was once used with citronella as a commercial insecticide.

Cedarwood, is a coniferous, slow-growing, evergreen tree. It has a dense, pyramidal crown, brown cones, and a red heartwood. The essential oil is collected by steam distillation from timber waste, shavings and sawdust. The oil is pale yellow-orange, with a mild, sweet balsamic scent. Native to North America, Cedarwood thrives in mountainous regions of the Rocky Mountains.

Cedarwood is used extensively in household insect repellents and room sprays. It is used extensively in soaps, cosmetics, and perfumes. Cedarwood's properties have been claimed to be anti-fungal, anti-infectious, antiseptic, astringent, diuretic, insect repellent, stimulant and sedative.

Chemical constituents include mainly cedrene (up to 80 %), cedrol (3-14%), and cedrenol, among others. Safety Data: May cause local irritation and possible sensitization in some. Use in moderation. Avoid using during pregnancy.
