Citronella: CITRONELLA CYMBOPOGON NARDUS

This oil belongs to the same family of aromatic, oil-rich tropical grasses as lemon grass and palmarosa. It has been used as an insecticide and for rheumatic problems, and other aches and pains in many cultures.. This oil is rarely used alone. Because of its highly antiseptic and deodorizing qualities, it is used a great deal in commercial preparations and some aromatherapy blends.

The essential oil is collected from the fresh part dried, or dried grass, by steam distillation. Java citronella yields twice as much as the Sri Lanka type. The oil is colorless to yellow-brown, with a fresh, powerful, lemony scent. The woody-sweet aroma is considered superior in the perfumery work. Citronella is a tall, aromatic perennial grass, derived from the wild growing "managrass" found in Sri Lanka.

Citronella is used extensively in soaps, detergents, household goods, & industrial perfumes. Used in insect repellent formulas to combat moths, ants, fleas, ticks & mosquitoes. It''s properties have been claimed to be antiseptic, antispasmodic, bactericidal, deodorant, diaphoretic, fungicidal, insecticidal, & anti-inflammatory.

Citronella may help colds, flu, fatigue, headaches, infections, migraines, excessive perspiration & oily skin & neuralgia. Mixed with cedar wood it makes an excellent insecticide.

Chemical constituents are mainly geraniol (up to 45%), citronellol(up to 50%), with geranyl acetate, limonene and camphene. Safety Data: Non toxic, non-irritant, may cause dermatitis is some individuals. Avoid during pregnancy.
