The emu, Dromaius nova hollandiae, is a large, flightless bird, best known for being opposite the kangaroo on Australia's coat-of-arms. Emu oil, derived from emu fat, has been used topically for its medicinal & healing qualities by the aborigines of Australia for many years. Thin layer chromatography research has found emu oil to be essentially free of phospholipids, more substantiation of the oil's ability to penetrate the skin so readily. Emu oil is of present interest to dermatologists & cosmetic scientists as a transcutaneous carrier system. It is with great hope that further research investigates emu oil's ability to combine with, & thus improve, cutaneous bioavailability of other topical pharmaceutical agents.
