Emu Oil

The emu, Dromaius nova hollandiae, is a large, flightless bird, best known for being opposite the kangaroo on Australia's coat-of-arms. Emu oil, derived from emu fat, has been used topically for its medicinal & healing qualities by the aborigines of Australia for many years. It is now in the forefront of cosmetological & pharmaceutical research in order to scientifically substantiate its numerous claimed uses. Emu oil has been found to be totally non-irritating, having excellent moisturizing properties & a cosmetically pleasing texture. Perhaps the most intriguing property of emu oil is its apparent ability to permeate the stratum corneum barrier.

Research using gas chromatography noted the composition of emu oil to be predominantly (70%) short chain monounsaturated fatty acids. The monounsaturated fatty acid, oleic acid, is the major fatty acid in emu oil. This fatty acid is a known enhancer for transport of bioactive compounds into the skin. Such a composition may explain emu oil's ability to penetrate easily through the stratum corneum barrier. Thin layer chromatography research has found emu oil to be essentially free of phospholipids, more substantiation of the oil's ability to penetrate the skin so readily. Emu oil is of present interest to dermatologists & cosmetic scientists as a transcutaneous carrier system. It is with great hope that further research investigates emu oil's ability to combine with, & thus improve, cutaneous bioavailability of other topical pharmaceutical agents. We use only the finest ultra-refined, pharmaceutical grade, odorless emu oil from an Oregonian distributor.

Emu oil is recommended as an anti-inflammatory to reduce pain from arthritis, muscle & joint aches, swelling, hemorrhoids, bedsores, & burns. It is an excellent emollient, reported to soothe the discomfort of skin irritants.
