LEMONGRASS: Cymbopogon citratus

Lemongrass has been used in traditional Indian medicine for infectious illnesses and for the treatment of fevers. Research in India has proven lemongrass to act as a sedative on the central nervous system. It is used as an insecticide and as a food flavoring. Lemongrass is an aromatic perennial grass growing quickly to up to five feet tall. The essential oil is collected by steam distillation from the fresh and partially dried leaves after they have been chopped. The essential oil is a yellow-amber color with a fresh citrus-grassy scent.

Lemongrass is used extensively as a fragrance component in soaps, detergents, cosmetics, and perfumes. It is also used as a flavor ingedient in most major food categories.

Lemongrass's properties have been claimed to be analgesic, antidepressant, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antipyretic, antiseptic, astringent, bactericidal, deodorant, fungicidal, insecticidal, nervine, and sedative. This oil may help improve acne, athlete's foot, circulation, eyesight, excessive perspiration, fevers, infections, open pores, respirator problems, sore throats, tissue regeneration, and water retention.

Lemongrass is native to Asia, where there are two main types. West Indian lemongrass, probably native to Sri Lanka, is now cultivated mainly in the West Indies, Africa, and tropical Asia. East Indian lemongrass, native to eastern India, is now cultivated mainly in western India!
