THYME: Thymus Vulgaris

Botanical Name: Labiatae

Properties: Anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-infectious, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, antiseptic, cardio-tonic, neuro-tonic.

Historical uses: Thyme was used by the Egyptians for embalming and by the ancient Greeks against infectious illness. It has also been used for respiratory problems, the prevention and treatment for infection, dyspepsia, asthma.

Thyme has also been used as a tonic for nerves and stomach disorders; bacterial infections, colds, circulation problems, and wounds.

Because this type of Thyme oil is a “linalol” type, it is safe to use on your skin. Other varieties of thyme oil contain large amounts of thymol and carvacrol, making them somewhat toxic, irritating to the mucous membranes, and skin.

While this type of thyme may be used during pregnancy, other kinds should be avoided. Use this type with caution if you are hyper-tensive.
