On Baby's Bum: From One Mom to Another, Pearls for Prevention

Change soiled or wet diapers as soon as possible to reduce irritation to baby's skin.

After removing each old diaper, make sure baby is clean and dry.

Gently wipe baby clean with a clean, soft cloth and warm water if possible. At least once a day, use a mild soap or cleansing agent.

Never rub dry - pat with a soft, dry cloth.
Before putting on a fresh diaper, apply a soothing ointment, cream, or lotion as a barrier against urine and feces that irritate baby's sensitive skin
Hummingbird's Tender Touch Lotion for Damaged Skin is a soothing, nourishing cream perfect for baby's bottom.
If you use cloth diapers, mild, unscented laundry detergent or soaps are kinder to baby's skin. (Use it for baby's clothing, too.)

If you suspect an allergy, try a different brand for your laundry. In hard water areas, half a cup of vinegar in your rinse cycle is often helpful.

Instead of a liquid fabric softener, use an unscented dryer sheet, as the liquid is absorbed into clothing and diapers and may cause skin irritation later.
